Biographical note:
Sharon Jessup and her husband lived in Ft. Richardson during the 1964 Earthquake. The family moved from Anchorage on May 4, 1964, due to Mr. Jessup receiving a new station assignment by the military.
Collection description:
The collection contains records pertaining to the 1964 Earthquake. The collection includes a 121 page scrapbook entitled “Alaska Fell Down,” which contains newspaper clippings, magazine articles from 21 sources, and typed earthquake experiences of Fort Richardson families. The collection also includes two reel-to-reel tape recordings of radio station broadcasts with messages, instructions of survival, ongoing searches for missing people, and recorded aftershocks. The collection also contains copies of letters Sharon Jessup wrote to her family in the days following the Earthquake, as well as a DVD with footage of the damage caused by the Earthquake in Portage and Anchorage.

Processing information: This collection was described by Veronica Denison in 2014. Per donor’s request, the DVD of the damage following the Earthquake was cropped to remove other material not pertaining to the Earthquake.
Location of originals: The original letters of correspondence and video are with the donor.
