Biographical note:
Miriam Bell has a Masters degree in Public Health and is a registered dietitian. In December 1970 she began the Regional Food Education Project as coordinator, a demonstration grant conducted by the Alaska Federation of Natives, Inc., through the Center for Disease Control, Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The main goal of the program was to improve the nutrition health status of the Alaska Native population. Improving the nutrition of the population was felt to be an important factor in alleviating disease and early death. The objective of the Regional Food Educator Program was to increase the nutritional information available to the people in villages.
Collection description:
The papers consist of nutrition-related training documents used in the project as well as later Native Health Service and educational manuals and course information. The collection also includes over 900 35 mm color slides, most of which pertain to the nutrition training program.
Arrangement: The collection is divided into two series: the documents and the slides. The documents are arranged in chronological order and the slides were maintained in the order in which they were provided by Miriam Bell.
