Biographical note:
Long-time Anchorage resident, Una Tuck, was instrumental in the establishment of Chugach Optional School. As a parent, her community activities include a variety of related educational initiatives in Anchorage.

Collection description: The collection consists of materials created by and collected by Una Tuck throughout community efforts of to explore optional education initiatives in Anchorage in the early 1970s.  Most materials relate directly to the creation of Chugach Optional School.  Files also include information on many related subjects including the founding of Steller Secondary School, the “Refocus Committee” of parents who joined to review the Anchorage School District’s educational philosophy, the Open Optional Coalition and the Anchorage Cooperative Nursery School.

Arrangement: The collection materials were arranged by Mrs. Tuck into several files which represent the developmental chronology of the efforts to create and sustain the optional education movement in Anchorage.
