Biographical note:
The Stewarts moved to Anchorage in 1942 and opened Stewart’s Photo Shop in downtown Anchorage in 1943. Long-time gem and mineral enthusiasts, the Stewarts traveled internationally for many years as well as in Alaska. Ivan Stewart died in 1986 and Oro Stewart died in 2002.
Collection description:
This collection consists of personal documents created and maintained by Ivan and Oro Stewart. Record types include: photographic slides, travel records, Chugach Gem and Mineral Society records, property records, moving image materials, and oversize photographs. The photographs, travel records, moving image materials, and oversize photographs are primarily from the Stewarts’ travel internationally on various gem and mineral-related trips. Those trips included China, India, Bolivia, Peru, Australia, Africa and a variety of other international destinations.

Acquisition note: Oro Stewart left these materials to the University as part of her estate.
Processing information: This collection was described by Arlene Schmuland in 2011. Slides were removed from their slide trays and retained in the order in which they had been placed in the trays. Tray descriptions were transferred to the folders. The records were otherwise left in the order in which they arrived at the Archives.
