Biographical note:
William E. Maas was from Oregon. He served as a seaman in the 51st U.S. Naval Construction Battalion during World War II. Maas was stationed at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in 1943. He died in Coos Bay, Oregon, in 1985.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photograph album of Seabee William E. Maas. The collection contains the original illustrated album cover, 21 original black and white prints, 11 black and white Alaskan commercial tourist prints, two 51st Battalion newsletters, a letter to Maas from the minister of the Church of Our Father Unitarian Church in Portland, Oregon, and two newspaper clippings. Subjects of the original photographs include: William Maas and fellow sailors of the 51st U. S. Naval Construction Battalion at Dutch Harbor; and friends and family members. Two of the photographs are of 51st Battalion members in formation at Dutch Harbor. The Alaskan tourist prints are primarily of scenes in Unalaska and Dutch Harbor. The newsletters, entitled, Fifty-First Battalion Headlines, are dated December 17 and 24, 1943. The two newspaper clippings consist of a Seabees poem and a report by U. S. Army pilots of 240 mile an hour winds aloft in the Aleutian Islands.

Arrangement: Collection materials are arranged by document type. Photographs were reordered by size.
