Collection description:
The collection contains two World War II era letters with envelopes written by Private Lawrence Juipe to his mother in Detroit, Michigan, while traveling by ship to Alaska in 1942. The letters were written on Alaska Steamship Company stationery. In the first letter, postmarked from Skagway and dated May 4th, Juipe writes that his ship arrived in Skagway that morning at 3:00 A.M. and would be leaving port in the late afternoon. He also writes that he will go out and see the town after lunch, that he has been picked by division headquarters to be a clerk, and that it will probably be a few more days before he reaches his final destination in Alaska. In the second letter, postmarked from Seward and dated May 7th, Juipe writes that his ship has been sailing for seven days and that he believes his final destination will be Seward or Anchorage. He also writes about the stops his ship has made on its voyage (Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway), comments on the weather, the towns and people he has seen along the coast, and tells of his time on watch, practice use of the ship’s guns, and rough seas on the voyage.
