Biographical note:
Lorrie and “Sarge” were a married couple who visited Alaska from February to September in 1948. “Sarge” may have worked as a civilian employee of the 10th Rescue Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. The couple lived on Fort Richardson and toured Alaska by car, railroad, and ship. The couple left Alaska via the Alaska Highway in September of 1948.

Collection description:
The collection consists of color photographic slides of a married couple who visited Alaska in 1948. The collection contains 441 color 35mm slides. Subjects of the slides include: buildings, aircraft and scenery on Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Field; the 10th Rescue Squadron’s dog sled team; Ship Creek area scenery; scenery in Girdwood, Portage and Turnagain Arm on Cook Inlet; a trip from Anchorage to Valdez and Chitina via the Glenn, Richardson, and Edgerton Highways; an air show at Elmendorf Field; Glenn Highway scenes; a picnic at Lake Wasilla; a visit to Matanuska Glacier; a cruise from Whittier to Adak Island and return aboard the ships USAT Cardinal O’Connell and USAT Sgt. Charles E. Mower; and native plants, salmon and miscellaneous scenery. Some of the slides have faded and red-shifted in color.

Arrangement: The slides in this collection are arranged chronologically within topical sections or folders. Most of the slides have a roll or packet number.
