Biographical note:
The woman who created these photographs, whose first name was Anita, was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve, also known as the SPARs. In 1944-1945, she was stationed with other women reservists at the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, 17th District in Ketchikan, Alaska, under Lieutenant Commander Theresa Crowley.
Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photographs of a member of the U. S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve stationed at Ketchikan in 1944-1945. The collection contains 56 black and white prints. Most of the photographs are of the women reservists and male coast guard members at their quarters in Ketchikan. Women reservists identified include: Camille Abrereco, Louise Alsedt, Millie Behea, Martha Bentley, Clarisse Bois, Lt. Commander Theresa Crowley, Helen Finstad, Audrey Foor, Harriet French, Roberta “Bobbie” Huff, Eunice Kirkland, Catherine Robinson and Wendy Willgoos. Other reservists identified by their first names only include: Anita, Betty, Gretchen and Jane. Male Coast Guard members identified include: Lieutenant Commander Fletcher, A.S. “Duff” McDermott, Al Ratliff and John Glascock. Locations where the photographs were taken include: Downtown Ketchikan, the Coast Guard Base at Ketchikan, Saxman Village, Deer Mountain, Point Higgins and Walker Cove.
