Collection description:

The collection consists of the contents of a World War II era scrapbook of photographs and xerographic copies of clippings on Alaskan subjects kept by Thelma Fetters from 1942 to 1943. The photographs (65 black and white prints) consist of unidentified people and locations in Anchorage from downtown and Mountainview, as well as many unidentified scenic views. Photographs include those of street scenes of Fourth Avenue in Anchorage (7 prints), the South Seas bar and dance room in downtown Anchorage (7 prints: 1 exterior, 6 interior), three men in front of the Mountain View Groceries store (1 print), and a boat at a dock on Kenai Lake (1 print). Unidentified scenic prints (9 different) and photo post cards (27 different) include those of mountains, lakes, roads, animals, frosted trees, native peoples and clothing, skiing, sled dogs, hydraulic gold mining, the northern lights, and other miscellaneous subjects. The clippings consist primarily of newspaper stories clipped from the Columbus Evening Dispatch on subjects relating to the war in Alaska and Ohio servicemen serving there from 1942 to 1943. Other items from the scrapbook include small maps of the United States and Alaska, and a tooth pick and paper cocktail coaster from Richmond’s Cafe in Anchorage.
