Biographical note:
John Leslie Beck was born in 1943 in Grand Junction, Colorado.  He received a B.A. from Sacramento State College in 1969 and came to Alaska in 1974, eventually residing in Palmer.  He was married to Linda J. Sloan.  In the 1970s and early 1980s, Beck worked as an archaeologist for the Anchorage District Office of the Bureau of Land Management.  John L. Beck died in 1995.

Collection description:
The collection contains papers kept and created by John L. Beck that relate mostly to his work as an archaeologist for the Anchorage District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Alaska.  These materials date from circa 1972-1984 and include notes, reports, and papers on archaeological studies in Alaska (some written by Beck but most by others); Beck’s professional papers from his work with the BLM; photographs taken by Beck of archaeological sites; and papers he kept from conferences, workshops, and trainings he attended on the subjects on anthropology, archaeology, and Alaska history.  The collection also contains some personal papers relating to Beck’s education, dating back from 1967, as well as reports on archaeological studies he conducted in California.
