Organizational history:
The Hans van der Laan Brooks Range Library was organized by the Brooks Range Trust in 1974, for the purpose of establishing, sponsoring, and supporting a library concerning the Brooks Range. The Library sought to amass a body of literature on the Brooks Range, the Arctic, and Alaska in general. It also perpetuated the memory of Hans van der Laan, a mountaineer and promoter for the preservation of the Brooks Range Region. Funds for the Library grew steadily and purchased materials were placed in the National Parks headquarters in Anchorage. In 1986, the North Slope Borough and the Library Board of Directors dedicated the Hans van der Laan Brooks Range Library to the Simon Paneak Museum in Anaktuvuk Pass. In 1991, the Board created an endowment with its remaining funds to be used for additional Library purchases. The Hans van der Laan Brooks Range Library Collection is currently housed at the Simon Paneak Memorial Museum in Anaktuvuk Pass.

This collection consists of the administrative records of the Hans van der Laan Brooks Range Library. The collection includes articles of incorporation, by-laws, agreements with the North Slope Borough, correspondence, operating records, and photographs.
