Biographical note:
William Boardman was born in Iowa in 1915. He attended Grinnell College and graduated from Drake University. He became an investment banker in Iowa but joined the Coast Guard in World War II. After the war, he became involved in business in Alaska, becoming an insurance underwriter in 1950. He served in the territorial and state legislatures (1953-1955, 1961-1971) and was Speaker of the House (1968-1969). He married Genie Chance in 1971.

Collection description:
The collection primarily consists of the legislative papers of William Boardman. It includes correspondence, bill files, photographs, subject files, travel documentation, campaign records, desk diaries, personal papers, and artifacts. Some records relate to his time with the Coast Guard and also his insurance business.

Arrangement: The collection is loosely grouped into William Boardman’s personal and legislative papers, desk diaries, other personal, political, and business papers, and artifacts. The groupings have considerable overlap in content. Within those groupings, the materials are generally arranged by year or span of years.  Please consult the box listing below for more content details.

Acquisition note: The collection was given to the Archives by William Boardman in 1986.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by John Nauman prior to 1990. The guide was updated to reflect current descriptive practice and standards by Arlene Schmuland in 2015. At that time, materials were removed from the collection. These include duplicative items, published materials, and confidential materials. The confidential materials related to William Boardman’s career as an insurance agent and included personally identifiable information, medical records, and propriety documents. Some materials relating to Grinnell College were sent to Grinnell College.
