Organizational history:
The Alaska Botanical Garden (ABG) began in 1983 when members of the Alaska Horticulture Association decided Anchorage should have an arboretum. In 1986, the organization was incorporated as an Alaskan non-profit and a master plan to guide the creation of the garden and infrastructure was developed. In 1990, Alaska Botanical Garden signed a land use agreement with the Municipality of Anchorage. The first gardens were planted and the grand opening of the Botanical Garden took place on July 25, 1993. Currently, the ABG occupies 110 acres between Far North Bicentennial Park and Benny Benson School. The Garden includes two perennial gardens (Lile’s Garden and the Lower Perennial Garden), the Herb Garden, an alpine Rock Garden, an entry shade garden, Alaskan Kitchen Garden exhibit, Wildflower Trail, Junior Master Gardner Plot, Research and Development site, and Lowenfels Family Nature Trail. In 2014, the Anchorage Heritage Garden exhibit was added in honor of the 2015 celebration of the Anchorage Centennial.
