Biographical note:
Don Grybeck joined the army in 1955 and served in the Korean War. He attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks beginning in 1957. Grybeck spent the summer of 1959 working as a surveyor for the Bureau of Land Management in Alaska. Grybeck graduated from UAF in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in geological engineering. He went on to earn his Ph.D in geological engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1969. He returned to Alaska in 1970 and taught economic geology, structural geology, mineralogy, field camp and geology of Alaska at UAF. In 1974, Grybeck left UAF for a job as geologist with the United States Geology Service (USGS) branch in Alaska. In 1975, Grybeck worked on the Tracy Arm – Fords Terror Wilderness mineral assessment and led a two-year regional assessment of the Brooks Range. As a geologist for both UAF and USGS, Grybeck travelled across Alaska for summer and winter fieldwork. In 1979, Grybeck moved to Reston, Virginia to serve as the Associate Chief of the USGS Mineral Resources Program. He was heavily involved in representing Alaska minerals interest during the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) debate and was Acting Chief for six months. In 1984, he returned to Alaska and later became Chief of the Branch of Alaskan Geology. During his tenure, Grybeck initiated a cooperative effort between the USGS and Russian Academy of Science, comparing mineral potential and regional geology of the Russian Far East and Alaska. In 1989, as part of an Alaska-Siberia joint project, Grybeck travelled to Siberia with USGS staff for summer fieldwork. In the late 1990s, he worked with the Alaska minerals community to acquire special appropriations for minerals information work, an outcome of which was the Alaska Resource Data File (ARDF).
