Biographical note:
Bonnie (MacCallum) Johnson was born in 1942, and attended East High School in Rockford, Illinois. After graduation, she attended nursing school at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital (now Rush) in Chicago, graduating in 1963. In 1965, she married Fred Johnson, and the couple moved to Alaska when Fred was drafted into the Army in 1967. Bonnie worked as a public health nurse in Fairbanks for more than 30 years. While in Fairbanks, she helped start hospice care, and established the first local chapter of the National Association of Diabetes. She also led a “5-a-Day Fruits and Vegetables” campaign, testified as a health expert to legislative bodies, and coordinated tuberculosis care and education. Bonnie helped organize a volunteer nursing clinic for foot care, called “Feet First”. In 1979, she earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and was awarded the BP Girl Scouts “Women of Distinction” award in 2015. Bonnie died in 2019.

The collection contains papers belonging to Bonnie Johnson relating to her public health career and nurses in Alaska. Included in the collection are records and video of the production of Tuberculosis: Shared Stories from Interior Alaska, documents related to a pioneer nurses banquet Johnson helped organize, and research and pamphlets related to Tuberculosis.
