Collection description:
The collection consists of a letter written by schoolteacher H.C. Wilson in Klawock, to his daughter Abbie Wilson in Hardin, Ohio, in 1891. The envelope was postmarked from Klawock on July 7th and is marked with a notation for the Shelby Company. In the four page letter, dated June 24th, Wilson acknowledges receiving his daughter’s last letter and accompanying packages, discusses family matters, and comments on conditions in Klawock. Concerning Klawock, he writes about the weather, problems with attendance at the school, relations with the superintendent of the local salmon cannery, expected visitors, current Hyde visitors from Howkan, continuing improvement being made to his house, and the recent start of operations at the cannery. His expected visitors for the Fourth of July were the Gould Family and Mr. and Mrs. McCleod. Wilson also provides an answer to an inquiry about the location of Howkan, and that the post office there is called Jackson.
