Biographical note:
John Karl Hardcastle was born in Ohio in 1909. In the spring of 1947, Hardcastle and his travel companion, Lee (possibly his wife), traveled by car with a trailer through Alberta and British Columbia on their way to Alaska via the Alaska Highway. John Hardcastle died in Bellevue, Washington, in 1990. Marianna Lee Hardcastle died in 2010.
Collection description:
The collection consists of a single page handwritten letter with envelope by John Hardcastle and companion Lee to his parents recounting their road trip from Edmonton, Alberta to Dawson Creek, British Columbia, in 1947. It is dated April 3, 1947, from Dawson Creek, and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Hardcastle, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the letter, they describe the difficulties of the trip, which included stops in Slave Lake, McLennan and Watino, including putting their car and trailer on a railroad flatcar for the leg between McLennan and Watino.
