Biographical note:
Gilbert Stevens was a United States marshal in Alaska. In 1924, he married Helen Stevens (neé Smith) in Fairbanks. In 1927, the couple moved to Vista, California.

Collection description:
The collection consists of a Nome Gold Rush era photograph album created or owned by Gilbert Stevens. The 86-page album contains 173 black and white prints. Subjects of the photographs include: voyages between Port Townsend, Washington, and Nome, Alaska, aboard the steamships Jeanie and Senator in 1901; soldiers and buildings at Fort Davis in Nome; a gold mine at Bench No. 7, Anvil Creek, in 1902 (E. A. Hegg, photographer); the U. S. Revenue Cutters Bear andThetis at Nome in 1901; people, buildings, street scenes, tent camps, and dog teams in and around the city of Nome; an Arctic Brotherhood ball; a picnic party of men and women on top of Anvil Mountain in July 1903; Inupiat peoples and an Inupiat trading and whaling camp at Nome; interior views of a house (B. D. Goetze, photographer); and a narrow gauge railroad.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in its original order.

Alternative formats: A xerographic copy of the original album was made, as well as 78 black and white preservation copy negatives of selected images.

Custodial history: The album passed from Gilbert Stevens to his stepdaughter’s husband, John B. Lewis, whose name and address appear on the front cover of the album.

Acquisition note: The collection was presented to the archives by Margaret Poynter in 2005. A deed of gift was signed in 2005.

Processing information: This collection was described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2005. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Gwen Higgins in 2016.
