Biographical note:
Madge and C.W. Stone were a couple from California. In 1928, C. W. leased a gold mine in the Moose Pass area from Oscar Dahl, owner of the Seward Hotel. The couple returned home to California later that year.
Collection description:
The collection consists of a four-page letter written by Madge Stone in Seward, Alaska, to friends, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Beach, in Sherman, California, on July 19, 1928. The letter is written on stationery of the Seward Hotel, featuring a picture of the hotel, and includes an E. A. Hegg photograph from 1900 entitled, “Laplanders milking reindeer at Port Clarence, Alaska.” In the letter, Madge writes about the couple’s stay in Seward, including unsuccessful gold mining prospects, local night life, prostitution, the sale and consumption of alcohol, and the weather.
