Biographical note:
Hans J. Christensen was a miner who lived with his family in York, near Wales and Tin City, on the Seward Peninsula. His wife’s initials were K. F. Their children’s names were Tom and Karen.

Collection description:
The collection consists of a family photograph album of the Hans J. Christensen Family. The collection contains the original album with 187 black and white prints, including a twelve page loose insert, and six loose prints. The photographs are primarily of miners and their families on the Seward Peninsula including York, Wales, Tin City, Teller, and Nome. Other couples and their children featured prominently in the album include Nick and Evinda Tweet, Tom and Alberta Petersen, and John and Agnes Reed. Also pictured is William Thomas Lopp, reindeer superintendent at Teller. Mining operations shown include those at Buck Creek, Bessie Bench, and Goodwin Gulch. Rivers shown include the Lost, Don, and Mint rivers. Ships pictured include the schooners Jewel Guard, Sea Wolf, and Mary Sachs, and the S.S. Victoria. Other subjects documented include freighting on the Seward Peninsula using dogsleds, wagons, and boats; Inupiat natives of the villages of Wales, Teller, and Plazeruk; and local schoolteachers. The album also contains some Lomen Brothers photo post cards.
