Biographical note:
Walter N. Argabright was a mechanic or machinist with the Alaska Air Depot at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, from December 1944 into 1945. The Alaska Air Depot performed maintenance on all United States Army aircraft in Alaska during World War II.
Collection description:
The collection consists of the personal photograph album of Walter N. Argabright. The collection contains: a xerographic copy of the original 64 page album; 394 original black and white photographic prints; a clipping concerning the awarding of a Purple Heart medal to United States Marine Private First Class Herbert H. Argabright (Walter Argabright’s brother) in January of 1945; a certificate awarded to a sailor aboard the USS Henrico in 1954; three golf cards from courses in Utah; a child’s drawing and note from Walter Argabright’s niece; and 21 selected black and white copy negatives. Locations where the photographs were taken include: Fort Richardson; Elmendorf Field; the Mountain View Store in Anchorage; the U.S.O. building in Anchorage; the ski jump on Ship Creek; the Glenn and Seward highways; the Eklutna cemetery; and the Matanuska Valley. Subjects of the photographs include Walter Argabright and coworkers at Fort Richardson; aircraft and hangars at Elmendorf Field (P-38, P-40, B-25, and C-47 aircraft); hunting and fishing; wildlife; and miscellaneous Alaska scenery (unidentified). The photographs also include some Argabright family photographs. Subjects of eight photo post cards include: the loop on the southern end of the Alaska Railroad (2 views); the SS Aleutian on the Inside Passage; and Otter Lake near Anchorage.
Arrangement: A photocopy of the scrapbook in the collection reflects the original order of the materials in the scrapbook. Photographs are arranged by size.
