Biographical note:
Sharon Gagnon received a bachelor’s degree in French from Indiana University in 1962. She later earned masters and doctoral degrees in French Literature from Harvard University while pursuing a teaching career. She moved to Anchorage in 1970, teaching French at the University of Alaska Anchorage as an adjunct faculty member until 1991. Gagnon has been active as a board or committee member for several Alaskan organizations including the following: UAA Citizens Advisory Council (1976-1980), Anchorage Volunteer Service League (1980s), Anchorage Chamber of Commerce (1981-1983, 1991-1992), Alaska Repertory Theatre (1984-1988), Anchorage Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics (1987-1993), Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (1991-1998), the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Public Advisory Group (1994-1996), and the Alyeska Pipeline President’s Advisory Panel (1999-2001). She was also a member of the University of Alaska Board of Regents (1991-1998), serving for a term as its president. Gagnon was honored for her service to UAA in 1985 when a lane leading to campus student housing was named after her.
Collection description:
The collection contains Sharon Gagnon’s professional papers. The board and committee membership records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, budgets, agenda, surveys, policies, publications, and other relevant materials.
Arrangement: The collection is divided into eight series:

Series 3: UAA Chancellor Search Committee member records; 1978-1994
Series 4: Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Education Committee records; 1981-1983

Acquisition note: The collection was presented to the Archives by Sharon Gagnon in 2003. A letter of gift was signed in 2003. Additional materials were added in 2005.
Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2006. The guide was reformatted in 2013 by Arlene Schmuland. Items were removed from Series 3 and 6 at this time. This included candidate information related to job recruitments, published items, and a set of the Board of Regents agendas. The Board of Regents agendas and materials published by University of Alaska and the University of Alaska Fairbanks were transferred to the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Materials published by the University of Alaska Anchorage were transferred to the university records collections within Archives and Special Collections. Other published items from the collection were transferred to Consortium Library holdings. Performing arts programs were transferred to the Ephemera collections of Archives and Special Collections.
