Biographical note:
Christian Theodore Pedersen was born in Norway. In 1894, at the age of 17, he left for a bowhead whaling voyage. Thereafter he held various jobs, including storekeeper, boatstearer, and harpooner. He later commanded a number of whaling or trading ships sailing in Arctic waters, including the Elvira, the Herman, the Santa Clara, the Challenge, and the Patterson. He captained the Patterson for coastal Alaskan and Arctic trading, including fur trading from 1923 to 1936. He was Vice President and Manager of the Northern Whaling and Trading Company; Manager of the Canalaska Trading Company; Proprietor of the Barnston Fur Farm; and was involved in other businesses, including H. Liebes and Company and the Aleutian Fur Company. During his involvement with the Aleutian Fur Company, much of the company’s property on Attu Island was destroyed when the Island was invaded by Japanese forces in 1942. Pedersen fought for over 20 years to recover those losses. Captain Pedersen also wrote a number of articles concerning his adventures.
