Organizational history:
Kuumba Black Artists Network, Inc., was formed in 1981 to promote and enhance African American culture through education and the arts. Its activities included cultural performances and exhibits, dance training, a youth cultural program, and an African American artists’ network. The organization also published a bimonthly newsletter called Drum Beat.

Collection description:
The collection consists of an album scrapbook and three videotapes of Kuumba performances entitled, “Moments in Time.”  The album scrapbook holds pamphlets, photographs, newspaper clippings, copies of their newsletter Drum Beat, and advertisements documenting Kuumba’s activities in the community.

Arrangement: The original order of the scrapbook is preserved, while the videos are grouped together.

Acquisition note: Opalanga D. Pugh, Kuumba Publicity Director and editor of the Drum Beat, deposited the collection in the UAA Archives and Special Collections in 1983.

Processing information: This collection was described prior to 1990. Collection reprocessed by Mariecris Gatlabayan in 2010. For preservation purposes, digital photographs were taken out magnetic album scrapbook and its contents placed in archival safe enclosures for archival purposes. Digital photographs of the scrapbook are available at the Archives.
