Organizational history:
The Anchorage Ski Club was organized in 1937 to promote interest and participation in skiing and to provide and maintain facilities necessary for that sport. It began with 35 members and by the early 1960s had grown to over 400. The club was governed by a ten member executive committee. The club sponsored or managed various activities including ski trips, annual downhill and ski jumping competitions, and the ski competition at the annual Fur Rendezvous. It also published a monthly newsletter, Swish, which was renamed Ski Heil in 1956. In the early 1950s, the club began to work in conjunction with the military to develop a downhill skiing facility at Arctic Valley near Anchorage. The facility eventually included a lodge, chair lifts, rope tows, a cafeteria, and a ski school. The Arctic Valley facility was operated by the Anchorage Ski Club into the late 1980s.
