Biographical note:
Maria Brooks writes, directs, and produces historical documentaries for Waterfront Soundings Productions in Oakland, California. She has also been active in producing oral history projects. In 1983, Brooks compiled the Alaska Women’s Oral History Project which includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews. In 1999, she created the documentary The Odyssey of Captain Healy about Captain Michael Healy who commanded the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bear in Alaskan coastal waters from 1886 to 1895. In 2005 she created the documentary Shipping Out: The Story of America’s Seafaring Women.

Collection description:
The collection consists of papers, videocassettes and discs from the oral history and documentary projects of Maria Brooks.  They include correspondence, reviews, interview transcripts, audiovisual copies of interviews and projects, and teacher’s companion guides.

Arrangement: The collection is divided into three series, based on projects:
Series 1: The odyssey of Captain Healy production materials; 1966-2000
Series 2: Shipping out: the story of seafaring women production materials; 2004-2005
Series 3: Ernest Johnson interview records; 1989, 1995

Alternative formats: Most audiovisual materials in the collection exist in both original master formats and dub formats for access.
