Collection summary: Scrapbooks of news clippings and reports on spending and commerce in Alaska compiled by a longtime Anchorage resident.

Biographical note:
Mildred Ostrom was born in Minnesota in 1911. She came to Alaska in 1941 with two friends and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After World War II, she waited tables at a cannery and worked for the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office. In 1949, she married her husband, Hilton Mantle. She then worked in public relations for the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, as well as serving as the secretary to the Anchorage School Board in the evenings. After her husband died in 1962, Mantle stayed in Anchorage and worked for the Anchorage Tuberculosis Association and the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. She died in Anchorage in 2011.

Collection description:
The collection consists of eleven scrapbooks of newspaper clippings dating from 1949 to 1956. There are indexes to the scrapbooks from 1949 and 1950, as well as reports that reference articles in the scrapbooks. The reports detail federal and state spending in Alaska, as well as budgets and bids for construction projects in the state. The materials may have been compiled during Mantle’s work for the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.

Acquisition note: This collection was donated to the Alaska Pacific University prior to 2005.  Alaska Pacific University retains ownership of the collection and placed it on deposit in Archives and Special Collections in 2005.

Processing information: This collection was described by Gwen Higgins in 2024. At that time, the scrapbooks were digitized for preservation and the originals disposed of.
