Collection summary: Photograph album of a member Company H, 4th Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Richardson in 1941.
Biographical note:
John Frederick Engel was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1917 and enlisted in the Army in 1940. He was sent to Ft. George Wright in 1940, and then Ft. Richardson in 1941. In 1942, he married Dorothea Regelsberger. Engel died in Minnesota in 1962.
Collection description:
The collection consists of a photograph album containing original and commercial prints documenting John Engel’s service at Fort Richardson, as well as his civilian life. Many of the photographs depict Engel and other military personnel on duty and engaged in recreational activities. Subjects of other images include buildings and construction on Ft. Richardson; street scenes in Anchorage; airplanes; scenery; and animals. There are also photographs of Engel with Dorothea and other friends and family in Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as photographs taken at Ft. George Wright and Ft. Lewis in Washington. Tucked between the first two pages is a certificate for the “Totem Igloo Mystic and Auroral Order of Alaska Cheechakos.”
