Biographical note:

James Harwood Whitney was born in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army in the 1960s and was stationed as a Nike Hercules missile operator in Anchorage, AK. Serving during the Good Friday earthquake of 1964, he took many personal photos of the damage in the city. After his service, “Jim” returned to Lebanon New Hampshire, where he and his wife, Kathleen raised two children, James Jr. and Kelly.

Collection description:

This collection consists of slides taken by James Whitney during his time in Alaska. Subjects of the images include the Nike Site Summit on Mt. Golden Lyon; the mountains around Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson; dogsled races in Anchorage; and damage caused by the 1964 Alaska earthquake. There are also some slides of Ft. Lewis in Colorado and a photographic print of a Nike Hercules missile.

Arrangement: The slides are arranged in the order in which they arrived at the Archives, which is roughly chronological.
