Biographical note:
Lennie and Thelma Hartman arrived in Anchorage, in 1955 when Lennie was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. After getting out of the service, Lennie worked for Hertz Rent-A-Car in Anchorage. Thelma became good friends with Rita Martin and was a bridesmaid in her wedding to future U.S. Senator, Mike Gravel. In 1963, the Hartmans moved to the Copper River area and homesteaded at Kenny Lake. Lennie worked for Bayless and Roberts bulk plant delivering fuel, and Thelma was the first secretary at the local high school after it was built. The couple had four children, Mike, Buddy, Peggy, and Laura. In 1983, the family moved to Fairbanks, and Thelma and Lennie later moved to Wasilla. Lennie Hartman passed away in 2021.
Collection description:
The collection includes original slides taken by Lennie and Thelma Hartman, as well as some commercially produced slides. Subjects of the slide include the Hertz Rent-A-Car in Anchorage; scenes along the Alaska (ALACN) Highway; Alaska Bible College in Glennallen; a 1965 flood in Copper Center; Copper Center School; Dogsled racing, the Hartman family; glaciers, parades, Kenny Lake Chapel; picnics, the wedding of Mike and Rita Gravel; the Hartmans’ homestead; the Trans-Alaska Pipeline; scenery; and Alaskan wildlife. Locations pictured include Anchorage, Chitina, Copper Center, the Kenai Peninsula, the Alaska Highway (Alaska and Canada), the Denali Highway, Portage Glacier, Worthington Glacier, Glennallen, and Valdez.
Arrangement: Thelma Hartman grouped the slides by subject, and these groupings have been maintained and organized alphabetically.
