Biographical note:
Joseph J. Burgess was born in 1904 and lived in Minnesota. He served as a lieutenant 714th Railway Operating Battalion, which was stationed at Fort Richardson during World War II. Burgess died in 1995.
Collection description:
The collection consists of photographs depicting the activities of the 714th Railway Operating Battalion in Alaska during World War II. Subjects of the photographs include a Christmas celebration; Burgess and other members of the battalion; military bases and camps; trains and other railroad equipment; and soldiers receiving medical and dental care. Many of the photographs in the collection appear in a regimental history of the battalion published in 1945.
