New in the Archives: March-April 2026

Time for our bi-monthly report! We’ve been keeping very busy. What isn’t reflected below is the research activity going on in the Archives over the past month, which has accounted for a fair number of hours. We’ve served researchers from all over the world including Europe and South America. We’ve supported the research efforts of students, teachers, genealogists, musicians, archeologists, museum professionals, Alaska Native corporations, government workers, historians, local businesses, and so on! We’re also in the midst of a migration to a cloud based digital preservation system (thanks to Gwen who is doing all the heavy lifting on this one) which we hope will eventually allow us to provide online access to some of our digital materials more easily. Becky continues to make great progress with the lands project though we are missing Luna, who departed in April to take a job that’s more closely related to her career goals (Yay for Luna, but we miss you.)

New online:

We’ve had an ongoing transcription project for the Ruben Gaines recordings that are up on the Alaska’s Digital Archives. Our volunteer transcriptionists have been hard at work and as of April 20, all of the recordings are transcribed! Ruben Gaines was a radio personality and story teller who was on the radio in Anchorage during the 1960s to 1980s. Thanks to Alice Cone and Robin Hanson, who between them, transcribed 222 recordings. Having a transcription for these recordings online allows them to be accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. We get pretty regular requests for access to the Gaines recordings from folks who remember his broadcasts, so it’s great to be able to make them so accessible.

Podcast episode:

Our podcast returns from a brief break with an interview of Julia O’Malley, granddaughter of Fred and Lidia Selkregg. Be sure to listen in to gain valuable insight into who the Selkreggs were, and check out their papers right here in the Archives.
