Getting to the Archives: 2025-2026 edition

Due to construction starting on Monday, July 21, on the North entrance and on the first floor of the Library, our usual suggestions for accessing the building and the Archives won’t apply for a while. At least a year, possibly longer. Be sure to leave yourself a little extra time for accessing the building for your appointment with the Archives since our closest lot won’t be available. Here’s some alternatives:

First up, a map:

As you might see: the North Library lot with its quick access to the North entrance of the library will be closed. So will the North entrance. The Library has two additional doors though, so that’s the good news. The first is the Plaza entrance on the south side of the building facing Providence Hospital. That’s the closest entrance for anybody taking the PeopleMover bus route.

If you park to the east of the Library building (along the curvy glass wall, on the right on this image), the Plaza entrance is your nearest door as well. The triangle on the east lot indicates the Pay and Park machine. You can also use the Passport app to pay online and easily lengthen your parking stay without having to go all the way back out to the machine and to your car. For more information about parking regulations and permit costs, see UAA’s Parking Services site. Remember: parking on campus on Fridays is free, but you’ll need to pay for parking on Mondays through Thursdays. If you have any questions about what rules apply for the days of your Archives appointment(s), just ask and we’ll be happy to provide the most current parking information.

If you prefer a more indoor walking route to the Library, we suggest the Central Parking Garage (on the left on this map) or the open parking in front of it. This area is easy to identify as you’re driving on campus because this area has the Tetradigm (the big blue pipeline sculpture) right at the entrances. The Pay and Park machine closest to this area is on an upper level inside the Parking Garage. Or again, you can use the Passport app and pay through that. This mostly-inside route to the library passes through the Social Sciences Building and the two entrances to that are marked on the map with arrows.

Of course there’s quite a lot of parking all over campus if you’re in the mood for a walk or if the closest lots to the Library are filled. This can happen, especially during fall and spring semesters.

Once you’re in the building, if you want to get some steps in, you can take the Foucault Pendulum staircase to the third floor and the Archives is down the hallway to your left. Or you prefer fewer steps or are looking for a more accessible route, you can continue past the Pendulum staircase and past the Reference Services desk to the elevators (right next to the Learning Commons) which will take you up to the third floor. The elevator lobby opens out onto the third floor hallway just a little ways across from the Archives entrance.
