Gary Thurlow was born on February 24, 1930, in Marshall, Oklahoma.
He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the
University of Washington in 1952, and his law degree from the
same school in 1957. He first came to Alaska for a summer job
in Takotna in 1951, and returned to the state in 1957 as an assistant
attorney general in Fairbanks. He moved to Juneau in 1958, and
was appointed executive assistant to Governor Egan in 1961. He
stayed in that position until 1964, when he moved to California
to work on large construction and land development projects. He
returned once again to Alaska in 1973, and held various positions
until his retirement in 1987; he was borough attorney for the
Greater Anchorage Area Borough, manager for the Matanuska-Susitna
Borough, and a lawyer in private practice. Gary Thurlow died on
August 9, 1995.

manuscript drafts of Gary Thurlow. The manuscript drafts, which
comprise the bulk of the collection, include memoirs of Thurlow’s
experiences in Alaska between 1951 and 1964; a history of Anchorage;
a lengthy work titled Urban Landscapes of the West: The Best,

be an earlier version of Beyond the Bell Curve, titled
The Growing American Underclass: The Undermining of Our Schools
and Institutions.
The personal papers include resumes, a report
of military service, a marriage certificate and divorce decree,
personal and business correspondence, and other items.

This collection was presented to the archives by Janice Thurlow.
