Peoples’ Vote Must Count Committee Collection Description

PEOPLES’ VOTE MUST COUNT COMMITTEE. Records; 1981. 1.5
cu. ft.

The Peoples’ Vote Must Count Committee was organized by a group
of Anchorage residents in 1981 to oppose the construction of a
Convention Center on Block 42 in downtown Anchorage and to uphold
the 1965 Anchorage initiative which dedicated that block to become
a park. Members of the committee included Ruth Moulton, Avis Cupples,
Lanie Fleischer, and Tom Leddy. The activities of the committee
included circulating petitions, organizing fund raising and support
meetings, and testifying before the Anchorage Assembly. The committee
was also instrumental in getting Proposition 10, which supported
the construction of a park on Block 42, placed on the ballot in
1981.

The collection consists of correspondence, legal documents,
speech notes, petitions, meeting notices, newspaper ads, and newspaper
clippings concerning Proposition 10, the Anchorage Assembly, and
Block 42.

The collection was placed on deposit in the UAA Archives &
Manuscripts Department by Lanie Fleischer in 1982.
